Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the difference between entrepreneurship and self-employment? +

Entrepreneurship refers to entrepreneurial thinking and action – the ability to identify opportunities, assess risks, and drive innovation. Self-employment is a legal form of work. You can think entrepreneurially without being self-employed – and vice versa. This course provides both: entrepreneurial thinking and the practical knowledge for everyday professional life.

02 What funding is available for SMEs in Germany? +

SMEs in Germany have access to a wide range of funding programmes – through KfW Bank, the BMWK, state development banks, and EU funds such as the ERDF. The course gives you a structured overview of the most important funding sources and explains how you as an SME can apply for and make use of these resources.

03 How does co-determination work in the German SME sector? +

From five eligible employees onwards, businesses in Germany can elect a works council. The works council has co-determination rights in social, personnel, and economic matters – as regulated by the Works Constitution Act (BetrVG). It is important for business owners to know these rights and to work productively with the works council. Module 3 of this course covers exactly that.

04 How can SMEs legally protect their innovations? +

Intellectual property – patents, trademarks, designs, copyrights – is an important competitive factor even for small businesses. In Module 6, you will learn how to protect your innovations, which bodies in Germany are responsible (e.g. the German Patent and Trade Mark Office), and how to avoid pitfalls in competition law.

05 What is meant by a viable business model for SMEs? +

A viable business model describes how a company creates, delivers, and is paid for value. In the SME context, viability means above all: solid revenue streams, a manageable cost structure, a clearly defined target group, and the ability to respond to change. Module 2 of the course provides practical tools for analysing and developing your business model further.

06 What legal obligations do business owners have in Germany? +

As a business owner in Germany, you are required, among other things, to comply with occupational health and safety legislation (ArbSchG), carry out risk assessments, meet reporting and disclosure obligations, and observe the requirements of commercial and corporate law. Module 5 of this course gives you a structured and practical overview of all the key legal areas.

07 Can I complete this course alongside my job? +

Yes. The course is fully online and self-directed. You can flexibly adapt the pace and schedule to suit your professional and personal situation. This makes it particularly suitable for working professionals who want to continue developing their qualifications alongside their career.
